As sporting activities change with the season, we encourage you to be diligent with stretching before engaging in physical activity. Research has shown that dynamic stretching is more effective before starting your sport and activities like walking.
Traditionally people did static stretching before exercising, but these have been shown to decrease performance in athletes if done prior to competing. Dynamic stretches should be done before exercising, and static exercises after exercise to relax and lengthen the muscles. The following 2 videos on You-Tube demonstrate the difference between these types of stretching. Please remember to check with your physiotherapist before you try these exercises, to ensure that they are all appropriate for you and your physical condition.
