Many of our patients have taken up Padel, which is the rage at the moment. Everyone seems to be enjoying the game and there are Padel courts popping up all over Benoni, and also at all of the popular holiday destinations.

Unfortunately, many Padel players are finding themselves injured and having to stop playing. There are several reasons for this, including playing too much Padel too quickly, not warming up properly or using the incorrect equipment.

There are several injuries  that are quite specific to Padel. The lunges and stretched that are required test the body in ways it may not be used to.

  1. Many patients enjoy the sport so much that they find themselves playing 3x per week right away, from not playing at all before. One needs to listen to your body and rest when you are tired or feeling strain. If you train properly and don’t overplay, Padel can be less taxing on your body than tennis.
  2. Due to the small court size and use of the glass, movements are sudden and quick, making injuries more likely. Overhead shots are different from tennis and can often lead to shoulder injuries.
  3. Skipping the warm up is one of the biggest reasons injuries occur. This could be due to time restraints, not having the correct equipment, or not knowing what routine to follow. Padel warm ups don’t require a lot of time and can be done whilst you are waiting for your court. In cold weather it is even more crucial to warm up as you could be more prone to elbow injuries.
  4. Your equipment must be suited to you. Heavier balls place more stress on your body, especially if they are wet. Playing with newer balls helps to prevent injuries. Padel racquets vary in weight and softness so you need to chose one suited to your body.
  5. The most common Padel injuries are in the elbow, shoulder, calf and ankles. Low back pain can be due to the stop-start nature of the sport. Knee injuries are also common, especially if the court is wet or sandy, causing you to slip or fall.
  6. If you sustain an injury, we can help with the pain and swelling, strengthen your body, and restore you back to your game.
