Many people believe a lot of myths around back pain. These cause a person to take the incorrect actions which are not helpful in the long-term.

Myths include:

  • Rest is the best treatment for low back pain
  • Back pain is always caused by a serious condition or injury
  • You should avoid exercise if you have back pain
  • Lifting heavy objects causes low back pain
  • X-rays are necessary to diagnose the cause of your back pain

The truth is that while short-term rest may help with severe back pain, gentle movement and specific exercises help to promote healing and prevent stiffness. If you strengthen your core muscles and maintain a good posture, these can reduce the risk of pain, even with heavier loads. Most back pain is the result of sedentary lifestyles, lack of exercise, poor posture and muscle strain. These can all be addressed with physiotherapy, stretching and strengthening exercises. Your physio will prescribe exercise for you that is safe and controlled, to improve strength and flexibility. Most cases of low back pain do NOT require imaging. Your physiotherapist will make a diagnosis using a physical assessment, as most pain is related to soft tissue or joint issues. Imaging is useful in more serious conditions, which are less common.
